EFCC Arrest Over 40 Suspected Cyber Fraudsters On Fresh Raid In Owerri

The Imo State Capital, Owerri went calm on Friday, 28th February, 2020 when men of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), stormed the city and arrested several suspected cyber fraudsters who are well known as Yahoo boys.

 

The EFCC operatives, Punch learnt, arrived from Enugu and reported at the police command headquarters in Owerri before going for their targets. It was also gathered that the men of the anti-graft agency stormed a building at Ugwu Orji at Owerri- Okigwe Road and arrested young men numbering over 40, alleged to be cyber criminals.

 

Punch reports that “the operatives who came in their operational vehicles also had two buses which they carried their suspects in. On reaching the building, the EFCC operatives, forcefully broke into the building and started arresting the suspects.

 

“The alleged cyber crime suspects who made attempts to run from the windows were equally arrested by the gun wielding EFCC operatives, our correspondent was told. Apart from arresting no fewer than 40 suspects , the anti corruption operatives recovered phones , laptops, tabs , WiFi, modem and vehicles from the suspects.”, the report stated.

 

An eyewitness also told Punch that ” EFCC operatives have arrested over 49 youths suspected to be Yahoo boys. They were living opposite Stone Castle hotel ,at Ugwi Orji on Owerri/ Okigwe Road, Owerri. They ferried them in two executive buses and fled.”

 

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Orlando Ikeokwu, confirmed the incident when contacted. Ikeokwu disclosed that the command was aware of the arrests.
